The 2016/2017 edition of the Ministry of Youth and Sports sponsored National County Sports came to an end to at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium last Sunday, with Nimba County dominating by winning the volleyball, basketball and kickball versions, while Montserrado captured the football trophy.

Piah Accuses Sports Ministry of “Massive Cheating” over Bassa Elimination

Presidential press secretary Jerolinmek Matthew Piah believes Grand Bassa were cheated in the 2016/2017 national county sports meet.

Bassa lost 0-1 to Margibi in the quarter-finals at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium on January 5 but Piah is pointing to an organized attempt to eliminate his county of nativity.

Piah was responding to a Facebook comment by ELBC deputy director-general Christopher Sellee, who said, “Operation Kpafoor is in oblivion. See you in next year in the county meet” after the match.

Montserrado Win First Trophy in 60 Years

Montserrado County soccer team yesterday secured a 4-2 victory, after 1-1 regulating after extra time to win on penalty shootout (3-1) against Maryland County at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS).

It was the first soccer victory for Montserrado County since the National County Meet was established in 1956 by President William V.S. Tubman as part of his unification policy to bring the country politically together.


Nimba County female team with three trophies

Nimba Win Basketball, Kickball, Volleyball Titles

Nimba County has won three of the four events (disciplines) in the 2016/2017 National County Meet.

Yesterday, Nimba County retained the kickball trophy, when she whipped Margibi County 4-1 points.

On Saturday at the open-air Sports Commission on Broad Street, the Mountainous boy dumped Montserrado 81-79 points.

In the Volleyball version, Nimba County also smashed Montserrado 3-1 sets.

Nimba has settled 4th place in the County Meet, after she bowed 3-2 to Margibi County, also over the weekend.

Petrokon Win District League

The maiden edition of the premier annual sports league of Putu Administrative District, Grand Gedeh County ended Sunday, January 1, 2017 at the Pennokon Sports Pitch.

In the male category, Petrokon CKA Tiama Town defeated Karlorwleh Town 3-0. The goals were scored in the 20th, 60th and 78th minutes by Zazay Jarwleh, Jr., Dixon Wion and Prince Wiah respectively.

Mr. Barwee Bents, youth president of the District presented the trophy, valued at USD350 and a cash award of LD4, 000 to Petrokon’s skipper Tipoteh Seah.
