Career Dev. "Crusade" at Barnersville Saturday

News Section:

Over 1,000 youths in the Barnersville Housing Estate and surroundings are expected to benefit from a one-day employment generation and career development crusade.

Commonly known as “Community Jobspiration,” the crusade has been organized by the African Foundation of Personal Growth and Professional Development (AFRIPAD).

The day-long symposium would take place on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the E. Jonathan Goodridge Memorial High School Auditorium, beginning at 10:00am.

“Community Jobspiration” is a “School to Work Africa” project and aimed at enlightening Liberian Youths on new perspectives and options of getting employed while guiding those still in school to prepare themselves for the world of work.

“This is the first phase of the program. We are impressed at the enthusiasm of the youths in Barnersville towards this program. After this, we would take the program to other communities in Montserrado and later to other counties.

The executive director of AFRIPAD, Daniel A. Maxwell, Jr., told our reporter that several youth groups in Barnersville and its environs have been invited to the program and they are expecting about 1,000 youths to benefit from the workshop.

“After this program, many young people who are hitherto idle and hopeless are expected to have new action direction which will get them positively engaged,” Mr. Maxwell asserted.

Minister Shannon on need for Environmental Policy

News Section:

Land, Mines and Energy Minister Eugene Shannon has expressed the need for the implementation of the environmental policy for present and upcoming generations.

Speaking at the close of a weeklong workshop on the Environmental Legislation, Minister Shannon mentioned hoeing of grass, fused gas caused by old vehicles, the dumping and spreading of defective vehicles in swamp and street places as some conditions that pose threats to the environment.

He said Carbon monoxide from old vehicles pollutes the air, thereby, posing threats to humans and animals that live in the environment. He also asserted that grading or hoeing the grass in the environment for a building project was responsible for making the soil to lose its quality; thus, making it to become fragile with different unfavorable colors appearing in it.

Minister Shannon added that after clearing the grass and following the project's completion, it would be better for the grass to be replanted and slashed regularly in order to prevent erosion and sweeping of soil's nutrients.

He noted that old cars dumped in swampy areas or left in street corners also pollute the water system and there was a need to remove them from the streets to be dumped in a particular location where they would not affect the environment.
