MONROVIA – Personnel of the Armed Forces Liberia (AFL) on Saturday, February 6, carried out a massive clean-up exercise along the entire stretch of Somalia Drive in Monrovia.

The clean-up campaign, which commenced as early as 6:30 a.m. and lasted up to 10:30 a.m., involved almost the entire hierarchy of the AFL.

The exercise was welcomed by residents of the various communities that benefited along the Somalia Drive and Freeway communities.

Acting Assistant Defense Minister for Public Affairs, David Dahn, told reporters that the clean-up exercise formed part of the activities commemorating this year’s Armed Forces Day celebration.

An official program commemorating the occasion will be held at the Grand Stand of the Barclay Training Center (BTC) in Monrovia beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2011, he announced.

February 11, 2010 commemorates the 53rd anniversary of the AFL, and the 102nd year of its existence.

Authorities at the Ministry of National Defense (MOD) say the president of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS), Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, will serve as keynote speaker at the occasion marking this year’s ceremony.

The disclosure was made in Monrovia on February 2, when MOD released a calendar of events covering this year’s anniversary celebrations.

A special Jumah Service for the AFL family was held on Friday, February, 5, at Benson Street Mosque in Monrovia.

On Sunday, February 7, a special thanksgiving service for personnel of the AFL was also held at the First United Methodist Church on Ashmund Street in Monrovia.

Also as part of the activities marking the anniversary, there will be a joint medical outreach to be conducted by the AFL on Tuesday, February 9, in collaboration with Jordanian medics serving with the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).
