October Surprise

Published:  30 September, 2005

I am writing to express my appreciation to the Daily Observer for the wonderful journalistic work it is doing for the Liberian people. Never before has the need been greater to inform our people about the future of our country. The many important and serious thoughts and admonitions given by well-meaning Liberians and friends of Liberia through letters and comments, are very helpful means of keeping the people informed.

With 22 candidates vying for the highest office of the land, it will make great sense if there were a wonderful October Surprise for the Liberian people. Now that we have only eleven days to go before the elections, the surprise would be for the 22 parties to be reduced to at least five. It's time for the real serious leaders of many of these political parties, many of whom I believe are spoilers, to do the right thing. News from the streets is that the Unity Party, The CDC, Brumskine's Party, Varney Sherman's Party, and the NDPL are the only real contenders. There may be just a few more to be considered vote getters. Let Liberia and the Liberian people be the reason why many of theses party leaders want to be president of the country. They must at this time demonstrate that genuine intention by merging with the Party or Parties most likely to get the blessing of the Liberian people. For the sake of Liberia and its people, it is time to get rid of the false pride that is hindering farsightedness and progress.
