Minister Paye Urges Compliance in Mining Sector

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Wilmot Paye, clarified to investors engaged in heavy black sand mining that the Government of Liberia's ban on this activity is aimed at regulating the sector rather than hindering investment opportunities in the country.
Minister Paye emphasized that the moratorium was necessary to address uncoordinated mining practices and ensure compliance with licensing regulations.
Speaking Friday when he met with investors who have been involved in mining heavy black sand, the minister told them that the moratorium was a result of the uncoordinated manner in which the mining of the mineral has been done over the years.
Paye disclosed the Ministry of Mines and Energy has no clear information about licenses in the Heavy black sand mining sector. “So it was imprudent to allow the operations to continue,” he said.
He highlighted the government's openness to all forms of investments that benefit both citizens and investors, emphasizing the importance of responsible practices in the mining sector.
“The Liberian government welcomes investments of all kinds, not only in mining, for the betterment of its citizens' living conditions as well as the Investors, but what we will not tolerate are harmful practices and lack of adherence to our laws,” the minister said.
William Hines, Deputy Minister for Operations at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, expressed concerns over improper mining practices in the heavy black sand sector, particularly citing issues in Marshall, Margibi.
The investors, including many foreigners, pledged cooperation with the ministry to address challenges and improve mining practices in alignment with environmental and social standards.
Minister Paye also oversaw training sessions for Mineral Inspectors and Mining Agents to enhance their expertise and adherence to mining laws. The Minister was honored by the Citizens Action Committee for his dedication and integrity, with Testimony Barclay commending his commitment to service and urging him to continue making a positive impact on society.
Minister Paye expressed gratitude for the recognition and reiterated his commitment to fulfilling his national responsibilities effectively for the country's benefit.
