MONTSERRADO COUNTY -- Current Miss Liberia, Shu-rina R. Wiah, has visited and donated aid to two orphanages and at least one displaced center in Montserrado County.

Wiah visited the Anna M. Enoch Orphanage in Upper Caldwell and the Golden Child Orphanage in VOA late July.

She met with approximately 114 orphans between the ages of two and 18 on July 27, and donated about six 50-kg bags of rice, four cartons of candles each, detergents and Vaseline.

The day-long orphanage tour ended at the Mount Barclay displaced center where she donated about three 50-kg bags of rice, one carton of candles each, soaps and Vaseline to the elderly people of the camp.

Wiah was accompanied by some of her able lieutenants, who aided her as she dispensed items to the needy of Montserrado County.

In an interview with a team of reporters, Wiah said her donations were based on her quest to be a role model for other young women; and being Miss Liberia, she said, affords her that opportunity.

She spoke highly of education, calling it a medium for national development. Without education, she declared, the nation will not move forward.

She said the cause of education is her target, as it will help young people in making the right decision for the country as well as themselves. She also stressed the need to eradicate teenage pregnancy in Liberia.

A 40-year-old Liberian painter has made a grief-stricken call to the general public, including foreign missions in the country, to come to his aid before his present health condition deteriorates further.

Flomo Yekeson is a Liberian artist whose paintings adorn many homes in and outside of Liberia. He has also done book illustrations for several authors in the country.

According to medical report in possession of the Daily Observer, Yekeson is suffering from spinal paralysis among other life threatening ailments. A medical diagnosis has revealed that surgical operation, required in order to restore the artist’s ability to walk again, can only be performed abroad, such as in Ghana and South Africa as recommended by medics.

Speaking from his home at Buzeh Quarters in Monrovia last weekend with tear-filled eyes, the artist said “If no one comes to my aid right now, I am going to die in a disgraceful way. I am therefore calling the general public, including foreign missions in the country to please come to my aid. I am also making a special appeal to Her Excellency, Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, to please help me before I die.

MONROVIA -- A Liberian artist, who is currently taking part in the reality show, Project Fame West Africa, is appealing to all Liberians irrespective of their status to vote his number 10 through an SMS text system via any mobile phone to Lone Star cell number 306.

“My name is Nicholas Joel Buiger. I am competing in Project Fame in Nigeria. I just want to beg my Liberian brothers and sisters to please vote for me because I want to win the competition for Mama Liberia. I will make you proud. God bless you,” Buiger told reporters in Monrovia recently.

Buiger, who earned his education and his livelihood through music, is among several contestants vying for the prestigious title, winner of Project Fame West Africa, sponsored by MTN, a mobile phone company in West Africa.

It all started with about 60,000 West Africans, who registered for this season’s PFWA contest. This large number dwindled when only 15 persons were found to be qualified for the Academy in Nigeria.

In this process, after 10 weeks of stellar performances, Buiger, winner of the ‘A Star Is Born’ national talent hunt, is set to follow in the footsteps of illustrious Liberians such as George Weah, who have made Liberia proud.

The young man is now among the last five standing at the grand finale of the reality show. Each vote counts, as the winner will be exclusively determined by fan voting.
